Microneedling Q & A
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a safe and effective, minimally invasive cosmetic technique that rejuvenates your skin and increases natural collagen production.
The treatment involves controlled puncturing of your skin that stimulates your body’s natural healing response. For several months after the treatment, your body produces new skin cells and increases collagen production. You enjoy natural-looking, enhanced skin texture and tone following your treatment.
What conditions can microneedling treat?
Microneedling is an effective treatment for a variety of skin conditions or as an alternative to skin rejuvenation surgery.
Dr. Delahoussaye-Shields and Dr. Grieshaber may recommend microneedling to treat the following conditions:
- Loose skin
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Melasma
- Sun damage
What can I expect during a microneedling procedure?
Dr. Delahoussaye-Shields and Dr. Grieshaber perform your microneedling procedure in a comfortable office environment. They discuss your cosmetic goals and review your medical history to ensure the procedure is right for you.
During your treatment, Dr. Delahoussaye-Shields and Dr. Grieshaber administer a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to prevent discomfort. They use a handheld device that contains fine miniature needles to puncture your skin. They roll the device over the treatment area in multiple directions.
What happens after a microneedling treatment?
Following your treatment, Dr. Delahoussaye-Shields and Dr. Grieshaber may use saline wraps or ice packs to reduce swelling and promote your skin’s natural healing process. You can return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure.
You may experience redness and swelling for two to three days following the treatment. Protecting your skin by using high-quality sunscreen during the healing process is critical.
You can expect maximum results of microneedling to take three months or longer. As your skin continues to heal and produce more collagen and new skin cells, your face appears smoother, and its volume increases.
Do I need additional treatments?
Dr. Delahoussaye-Shields and Dr. Grieshaber create a custom treatment plan based on your medical history and cosmetic goals. They may recommend follow-up treatments at three- to eight-week intervals to achieve your desired results.
Microneedling treatments can also be combined with other dermatological procedures to enhance results.
